of cytoplasmic components by the lysosome/vacuole a n d has a significant relationship to several neurodegenerative dis o r ders a n d myopathies in mammals (1). Apg7 (Atg7) is a unique E1 enzyme which is essential f o r both the Apg12p- a n d Apg8p-modification systems, a n d plays indispensable roles in autophagy (2). A new molecular pathway has been defined in which activation of the recept o r -interacting protein (a serine-threonine kinase) a n d Jun amino-terminal kinase induced cell death with the m o r phology of autophagy.
